How our grading works

Most used scanner listings online say "powers on, untested." We run fingerprinting operations, so we test every unit the way an operator would before a shift, then grade it honestly. Here is the exact rubric behind every condition badge on this site.

The test checklist

Every graded unit (Certified Refurbished through Grade C) passes the same checklist before it is listed. The results ship with the unit.

  • Power and enumeration: the unit powers up and enumerates over USB on a clean host.
  • Capture test: we take real captures with the manufacturer's capture tool: flats, and rolls where the scanner supports them.
  • Image quality: captures are checked for dead zones, streaks, and contrast problems across the full platen.
  • Platen inspection: the capture surface is inspected under light; any blemish is noted on the listing, even outside the capture area.
  • Firmware: we record the firmware version so you know exactly what you are getting.
  • Accessory inventory: cables, hoods, and cases included with the unit are listed per unit, not assumed.
  • Wipe and reset: the unit is cleaned and reset before shipping. Fingerprint scanners generally store no biometric data on the device; see the FAQ.

Why you can trust the grade

BiometricSource is operated by TenScan, a working fingerprinting operator. The used hardware here is largely our own field surplus: scanners we bought new, ran under maintenance, and retired on schedule. We know each model's failure points because we have supported them in production, and we grade with the same eye we use when a unit comes back from one of our own sites.

Every graded listing shows photos of the actual unit, its masked serial number, the platen condition note, and what is included in the box. If a unit is only good for parts, we say so and price it that way.
